2020: A new era begins

You often hear people talk about a new ‘era’, or ‘age.’

A lot of this is over-hyped nonsense. But astrologically we are indeed heading into a new era. And although it begins in 2020, we can already get a sense of what it might be about. This is because it actually started in 1980, but then ended temporarily in 2000. Confused? Read on.

Every 20 years or so, the planets Jupiter and Saturn appear close to each other in the sky. This phenomena is called a ‘conjunction’ or ‘coming together’. The conjunction signifies the ending of one 20 years cycle, and the beginning of a new one. Astrologers have recognised this for many years. For instance, noted English Astrologer, William Lilly (1602-1681) even wrote a book (called England’s Prophetical Merline Foretelling to All Nations of Europe Until 1663 the Influence of the Conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter) about a conjunction in the 1640s.

These 20 year repeats of the Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions cycles are interesting, but Not Really A Big Deal, astrologically.

However, what IS truly interesting is that for many, many years, conjunctions will recur in signs of the same element (e.g. either Earth, Water, Air or Fire). Astrologers find this very significant, as this repetition by element marked out the duration of an ‘era’ or ‘age.’ So when the conjunctions eventually switch to occur in new element – well, that is what’s called a ‘mutation’, and marks the beginning of a new era or age.

We had just such a mutation in 1980, marking the start of the new era. And then in 2000 the conjunction occurred back in an Earth sign. So until 2020, we’re still under the influence of the Earth sign conjunction. But that 2000 conjunction is the last Earth sign conjunction for many years. Because from 2020, conjunctions will be in Air signs. Until 2159! (BTW, This table shows details of the conjunctions by dates and signs)

Let’s look back in time for a moment, to make more sense of all this. Since 1802, ALL the Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions until 1980 had occurred in Earth signs (either Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn). But as mentioned above, in 1980 it shifted. That year, the conjunction in an Air sign, Libra. In 2000, we had that final ‘last-gasp’ conjunction in an Earth sign.

But what does all this mean?

Well, for starters we’re moving away from an era dominated by ‘Earth’ stuff. Like oil, fossil fuels, heavy machinery. And possibly capitalism, and Big Industry. We got a taste of what’s ahead from the 1980-2000 period. During that time, we saw the boom of the information revolution: personal computers, the internet, Google. The collapse of the Berlin Wall.

The new era that will kick into high gear from 2020. It will see colossal growth in ideas and information (Air qualities) and less tangible, less ‘Earthy’ things. Self-driving cars are just around the corner. As are huge breakthroughs in battery technology, renewable energy and electric-powered everything. Coal, steam, oil: these have had their day.

Yet there are still governments functioning as if the 2000-2020 Earth sign conjunction was the only game in town. And there’s lobby groups and right-wingers who are desperately clinging to the old way of thinking. Look at Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who has stated he thinks coal has a ‘good future.’ When in fact smarter nations around the world (Norway, Scotland, Germany etc) are switching to renewables as fast as they can.

2020 and beyond will also mark the end of ‘Big Power.’ The idea of colossal electricity supply networks will seem laughable and go the way of the dinosaur, in the same one that mainframe computers did in the 1970s. Electricity will come from decentralised, even person, production.

So in some ways we’re heading into a brighter, smarter and very modern future. One that will be less possessive and greedy, I hope. And although 2020 will not be a a panacea to all our woes, it certainly does look like we will soon be living in a more vibrant and egalitarian era.

What roll will Pluto in Aquarius play in during that 2020 to 2040 era? How will the energy of Aquarius be different from the Libra energy from 1980 to 2000.

    • Charles says:

Pluto’s role – I’m not sure. It’s a transpersonal planet, so it’s influence will be more ‘behind the scenes’ than Jupiter and Saturn. Aquarius will be more fixed and robust than Libra. More emphasis on groups, collective issues. And the structures in society (as it is ruled by Saturn). By structures I mean infrastructure, and I recently saw a video on YouTube of a flying car, which thematically fits nicely with this coming era. There will be a HUGE leap in transportation, artificial intelligence and self-driving cars.

  2. This conjunction will also coincide with the “Saturn return” for many people. I realise it’s generational, but what do you make of that? Specifically, of the second “SR”?
Going by what many astrologers are saying (and I am quoting the usual tripe), the SR is supposed to be a “test”, to restructure your life, to make you “stronger” and so on.
But, frankly, those expressions seem a little ridiculous, not to say callous. What “test” could people in their late 50s possibly have to undergo that they haven’t already? And being far less resilient, with far fewer options than in their late 20s, what would such “test” accomplish? Wipe out an entire generation? :)

    • Charles says:

To be perfectly honest, I don’t make much of the ‘Saturn Return’ being part of the 2020 conjunction. People have their SRs every day. Of the second SR, I’m having mine next year. And yes, there is the superficial view about the SR being a ‘test’ and all that. But there is a grain of truth in it, and for me it will be interesting to see if anything next year relates back to when I was 29 (first SR).
So I don’t see second SR as a test, more of a ‘marker’. Am I a grown up? That seems to be a Saturn question. At 28-29 that’s the challenge. As for the second SR, it’s probably more of a reconciliation or reflection.
So in summary, to me the SR is separate and relates to a person’s horosope. Whereas 2020’s Jupiter-Saturn conjunction is for humankind as a whole. It extends and builds on what was started in 1980. What we call the Information Revolution will morph into the Intelligence Revolution. By that I mean Artificial Intelligence, Robots, automated everything. And renewable energy, not oil, gas, coal (all ‘earth’).
      Thanks for your comment. :-)

Been thinking about anti-gravity mechanical issues for a bit now. I have given away the equation for creating hoverboards… im a lil concerned about atmospheric conditions smart ones…..
