Canadian indie rocker Alanis Morissette shot to fame in 1995 with the release of Jagged Little Pill. That album sold more than 33 million copies.
Alanis Morissette’s horoscope has some challenging features. Overall, they indicate someone channelling powerful emotions to the world.
Morissette was born June 1st 1974 in Ottawa, Ontario at 9:51 am. This data is rated ‘A’ (reasonably accurate) by astrodatabank.com.
Her horoscope has a number of significant planetary aspects, more than average. This indicates a fairly complex individual.
Let’s take a look at these aspects one at a time.
Sun opposite Neptune
Alanis’ Neptune is in an opposition aspect (180°) to her Sun in Gemini. This is shown by the purple arrow, above.
Neptune in astrology is symbolic of many things: including mystery, sensitivity, artistic inclinations and mysticism. Here Neptune is hard-wired to Alanis’ Sun. The Sun is our identity, self, and ego.
Combined, this Sun-Neptune aspect could be a fragile or sensitive sense of self. Someone not always entirely sure of exactly who they are.
It could also be someone who’s identity has a mystical, otherworldly dimension. It’s a useful aspect for an actor, as it gives a ‘fluidity’ to their identity.
Morissette’s Neptune is in her 5th house of creativity, so area of life will be influential to her identity (Sun).
Australian politician Bill Shorten has Sun opposite Neptune. In his context, this gives him empathy and sensitivity. But he lacks the clearly-defined identity of more forceful political figures.
Other celebrities with Sun opposite Neptune include Angelina Jolie, Elizabeth Taylor and Edward Snowden.
Moon opposite Venus
This is shown by the orange arrow, above.
Venus is very prominent in Alanis Morissette’s horoscope. This is because it is essentially and accidentally dignified. In other words, Venus is strong in two main ways.
Firstly, because Venus is in a sign she rules, Taurus. A planet in the sign it rules is said to be ‘at home’ or in its domicile. And a planet at home is well-equipped to express itself well.
Secondly, Venus is in an angular house, the 10th.
The 10th is the house of career and vocation. With Venus in Taurus in the 10th, we have a career (10th) shaped by the artistic and aesthetic planet Venus. And a career that Morissette is likely to ‘love’ (Venus).
With Venus opposite her Moon, feelings are also involved. Intense feelings. Because her Moon is in the water sign of Scorpio. Scorpio is the most emotionally intense sign of he zodiac.
Her Moon is in the 4th house of family and foundation. This is an angular house, so her Moon is accidentally dignified.
Venus and Moon (and Uranus — more on that later) are two defining planets in her horoscope because they are in angular houses. They are the ‘loudest’ planetary energies in her horoscope.
And they underpin and inform what she sings about.
Because both Alanis’ Moon and Venus aspect her Mercury, planet of communication.
Moon trine Mercury
The pink arrow above shows a trine aspect (about 120°) between Moon and Mercury.
Both are in water signs, denoting intense emotion (Moon in Scorpio) directing emotive communication (Mercury in Cancer).
This is a ‘soft aspect’, so the qualities of this planetary aspect is not always switched on. It’s ‘on call.’ But it certainly puts intense emotional issues in the spotlight.
Particularly issues around trust, forgiveness, anger (Mars rules Scorpio), resentment and intense experiences generally. These are all Scorpio-related themes.
Venus sextile Mercury
This is another soft aspect (about 60°) between two planets. It is shown by the light blue arrow, above.
The effect is not all that strong (sextile), but it does show a connection between Alanis’ artistic career (Venus in 10th) and what she has to say (Mercury).
So the intense emotional component of her communication (Moon to Mercury) is here inflected with an artistic (musical?) career element.
Let’s now wind up the intensity. Just a little.
Mercury square Pluto
This is shown by the red arrow, above. This aspect amplifies Alanis’ communication abilities. It turbocharges all of the above.
Whether they are aware of it or not, people with certain Mercury-Pluto aspects in their horoscopes have a powerful way with words.
This can be transformative and therapeutic. Or, at the other end of the scale, harsh and cruel speech.
Pluto is about power, transformation, secrets, powerful hidden forces. Here, this is likely to express through what Alanis says, or sings (Mercury).
And what she sings, as we have seen, is already flavoured with intense emotional energy (Moon in Scorpio).
Celebrities with Mercury square Pluto include Prince, George Lucas and Zooey Deschanel.
Mercury conjunct Saturn
Just to complicate things, we now have Saturn involved in all of this.
Saturn is restriction, discipline, structure.
So the process of singing or communicating is likely a struggle. A process that isn’t as free-flowing as it could be. One that requires hard work (another Saturn quality).
It’s as if her powerful emotional energy is squeezed out through her songs in a restrictive (Saturn-influenced) way. Which makes it seem more intense, due to the effort required.
This Mercury-Saturn signature certainly reflects the bottled-up anger and emotional intensity of her music.
Taylor Swift and Sheryl Crow’s horsocopes also feature this aspect. Although their conjunctions are not as powerful as Morissette’s.
This is because the planets are further away from each other in their horoscopes.
Mars square Uranus
Shown by the purple arrow, above. Uranus is restless and changeable. Here is is permanently (hard aspect) connected to Mars by square (about 90°) aspect.
This means Alanis’ actions (Mars) can be abrupt. She can change and reinvent how she does things (Mars) as required.
This Uranian quality is prominent in her horoscope because Uranus (like Venus and the Moon) is in an angular house, the 4th, of her horoscope.
Uranus is also innovation and creative re-invention — doing things the non-traditional way.
Alanis’ Mars is in watery Cancer in the hidden 12th house. So abrupt action is more likely to occur well out of public view.
Mars is also ruler of the Aries 10th house of career, and so this is one area of life where she is likely to experience change and re-invention.
Sun square Jupiter
The orange arrow above shows Sun square Jupiter. Jupiter is fortune, luck, expansiveness and opportunity. But also prone excess, over-estimation.
We saw earlier that Alanis has Sun opposite Neptune. So this Jupiter connection is another factor influencing her self and identity.
Positively, this could bring a sense of optimism and expansiveness. On the other hand, perhaps over-doing and over-estimating.
Combined with the Neptune influence, this could all mean someone wanting more (Jupiter), but who is not quite sure what ‘more’ is (Neptune).

SOLAR ARC DIRECTIONS
The album was released June 13th, 1995. Below is Alanis Morissette’s horoscope (inner) and her Solar Arc Directions (SADs) for that day.
SADs show the ‘bigger picture’, and indicate longer-term themes in our lives.
There are a few things happening here. They all point to a time of significant change.
SAD Mercury-Saturn is square to natal (horoscope) Uranus. This is shown by the red arrow, above.
Mercury, as we’ve seen, is connected to Pluto, Moon, Venus and Saturn in her horoscope. And Mercury is communication. Such as singing.
There is also SAD Pluto conjunct natal Uranus (blue oval, above). This brings power, force and transformation into play at this time. It amplifies the Uranian component of Alanis’ horoscope.
And finally, there’s SAD Sun, which recently (maybe eight months earlier) moved into a new sign, Cancer.
This marks a shift in Alanis’ solar expression, to one with a stronger emotional (Cancer, ruled by Moon) component.
TRANSITS
Below are transits for July 13th, 1995, with Alanis’ horoscope again in the middle.
Transiting Neptune is opposite natal Mars (red arrow) and square natal Uranus (blue arrow).
Neptune here is activating the Uranus-Mars in her horoscope.
Activating it in an idealised Neptunian way, maybe. This could mean the realisation of dreams. Also above (not marked) is transiting Jupiter conjunct her Neptune.
This amplifies the Neptune focus of these transits, by amplifying and enlarging (well, temporarily) natal Neptune’s influence.
Alanis Morissette’s horoscope: summary
Alanis has a tough, difficult horoscope. Not a walk in the park.
But this complex interaction of energies is the driver of her talent. And marks her as someone of considerable depth and intensity.
Her music comes straight from a powerful core of emotional energy.

Yah, this is awesome!! She is certainly an intriguing character. She was a keynote speaker at the world’s leading psychotherapy conference in Anaheim a few years ago, which came as no surprise to me, as her lyrics are so deeply insightful of the human condition.
